Name: Formica sanguinea
Propagation: Europe
Queen: 7-10mm
Workers: 5-10mm
Food: Insects and honey water
Air moisture: 50-70%
Temperature: 20-30°C
Hibernation: Yes, from late November to late February at 10-14°C
Nest-building: Soil nests
Formicariums: Tank, farm tank
Formicarium size: min. 30x20cm (adjust to colony size)
Particularities: The only ant from the Raptiformica subspecies to be indigenous to Europe. This ant species raids the nests of slave ants, mostly Formica fusca. The stolen brood hatches in the nest of its captors and serves as labour force. Formica (Raptiformica) sanguine make do just fine without this labour force, which is thus not essential, except to the queen, during the founding stages of the colony.
