Particularities: Reddish-coloured Odontomachus species from Thailand. Ants from the Odontomachus species are also known as ‘trap-jaw’ ants. They have very large mandibles which are usually cocked at a 180º angle from one another. The ants can snap their mandibles shut with considerable speed, thus effectively trapping prey. In addition, their stinger allows them to paralyse larger prey. The colonies do not grow to particularly large sizes, but they are highly aggressive and attack anything that moves.
