Particularities: Ants from the Odontomachus species are also known as ‘trap-jaw’ ants. They have very large mandibles which tend to be cocked at a 180º angle from one another. The ants can snap their mandibles shut with considerable speed to effectively trap prey animals. Odontomachus hastatus is one of the largest of all Odontomachus species. Strikingly beautiful colouring. Nests mainly in treetops, between epiphytes.
