Name: Messor cf. barbarus
Propagation: North Africa
Queen: 13-17mm
Workers: 3-14mm
Food: Insects and honey water. Their main food source is however made up of seeds from various plants found in the wild.
Air moisture: 40-60%
Temperature: 20-30°C
Hibernation: Nein
Nest-building: Soil nests, often under stones and in sand
Formicariums: Tank, farm tank
Formicarium size: min. 30x20cm (adjust to colony size)
Particularities: We brought this ant species back from our latest trip to Africa. The gasters of the queens are strikingly coloured and their heads range from orange to red. These pictures show 2 different queens, so as to depict their colour more accurately. Unfortunately, the colouring on these pictures is not entirely true to reality. Just like all other Messor species, these feed mostly on seeds which they store in their nests, opening them as and when needed to chew them up in large chewing communities to make “ant bread”.
